Legislators Introduce Bill for Gigabit Wi-Fi & Unlicensed Spectrum Studies |
Republican members of the House Communications and Technology Subcommittee recently introduced legislation that would sponsor a study into how unlicensed spectrum could help fulfill broadband demands and how to potentially deploy gigabit Wi-Fi at bands under 6 GHz. |
The study would be conducted by the Comptroller General of the United States and would hopefully identify opportunities to meet the constantly increasing demand for connectivity as the number of connected devices grows. The study would also outline the “economic benefits to providers and subscribers” that gigabit Wi-Fi would provide. |
The Subcommitte doesn’t want to waste any time, either. The bill sets an 18 month deadline for the Comptroller General to submit the findings of the study to the House and Senate, with conclusions and recommendations. |
The bill has received support from CTIA, with Senior Vice President for Government Affairs Kelly Cole saying in a statement, “The common sense measures in the bill will improve American’s access to new and evolving wireless services.” |
As the number of smart, connected devices, both in use by consumers and in industrial or public applications, continues to grow with no end in sight, finding creative ways to potentially address the demand for ever more bandwidth will be critical to keeping up and helping the technology deliver on its full potential. |
