Verizon Announces Plans
for NB-IoT Network in 2018

After a successful trial of Ericsson’s IoT software on their 4G LTE network, Verizon has indicated they plan to implement a nationwide Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) network by the end of 2018. The expansion of this technology will deliver more accessible coverage and security for customers in need of affordable IoT access, a Verizon press release said.

NB-IoT is a Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN) technology that functions on a 180 kHz bandwidth that doesn’t share spectrum with smartphones and is designed for IoT applications with data rates below 100 kbps. Rather than the low latency and extreme speeds heavier IoT applications need, NB-IoT networks are focused on indoor uses and long battery life, as well as the capability to support a large number of devices at a lower cost. Examples of uses already in place on NB-IoT networks include smart parking lots and irrigation systems. Better access to this connectivity will make it easier to deploy simpler IoT solutions and will provide a scalable solution for consumers looking to break into IoT.

Bill Stone, Verizon’s VP of Network Planning said in a release, “We are committed to providing more customer options in the IoT ecosystem by leading with new technologies and capabilities such as NB-IoT Guard band.”

The full network is expected to be completed by the end of 2018 and will cover more than 2.5 million square miles.
